A cult clash in Ilese, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, has resulted in the deaths of a police officer and an unidentified man. The incident occurred on Saturday night when suspected cultists opened fire in the area.
Sources believe the clash was between members of the Aiye and Eiye confraternities.
“One of the victims is a police officer, Olamilekan, who serves at the Obalende Division in Ijebu-Ode. The other victim’s identity is unknown. The attackers fired shots repeatedly, causing panic among residents as they fled the scene.” Says one of the witnesses.
The Ogun State Police Commissioner, Lanre Ogunlowo, confirmed on Sunday that a police officer was attacked, but said he’s still waiting for more information about what happened. “I can confirm a police officer was a victim, I’m still waiting for the details,” he said.
This incident comes after a string of violent attacks on police officers in recent weeks. Last week, five officers were killed and two injured in an ambush in Bauchi State, and another officer was killed in the Federal Capital Territory while trying to stop a kidnapping.
