A newlywed wife has been arrested by the Jigawa State Police Command for allegedly poisoning her husband, who died after eating a meal she prepared.

The incident occurred on January 23, 2026, at around 5:00 pm in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area.

HiThe man reportedly fell seriously ill after lunch and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Jigawa Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, said detectives from Jahun Division arrested the wife as the prime suspect.

“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison,” he said, adding that she sent her cousin to buy the poison.

The suspect reportedly told police that she was forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she claimed led to her actions.

SP Adam said the Commissioner of Police has ordered a thorough investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse.

The suspect will face prosecution once investigations conclude.

The police urged the public to remain calm, resolve marital disputes lawfully, and avoid taking the law into their own hands, warning that such actions often have irreversible consequences.

“The police will ensure justice is served,” SP Adam added. The suspect remains in custody, awaiting trial.
