Adeyeye explained that NAFDAC sometimes releases safety alerts or recalls involving particular batches of medicines found to be substandard or compromised, but stressed that this should not be mistaken for a blanket ban.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has refuted a viral social media claim alleging that the sale and use of Amoxicillin have been secretly banned in Nigeria, with the agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, stating that no such nationwide prohibition exists.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, Adeyeye explained that NAFDAC sometimes releases safety alerts or recalls involving particular batches of medicines found to be substandard or compromised, but stressed that this should not be mistaken for a blanket ban.
She said, “NAFDAC has not banned Amoxicillin in Nigeria, either secretly or openly. As a responsible regulatory authority, the Agency publicly notifies Nigerians of any regulatory actions through official channels.
“NAFDAC alerts the public through its Recalls, Safety Alerts, Blacklists, and other safety notices of any substandard, falsified or affected products requiring regulatory action.”
The agency noted that its safety notices always contain precise details, including the names of affected products, batch numbers, manufacturers, and instructions on the steps to be taken.
NAFDAC further clarified that when blacklisting is applied, it is directed at specific companies and their products, restricting their sale, distribution or use because of safety concerns, regulatory violations or unethical conduct.
