Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, said the change aims to prioritise content that resonates with local and regional audiences

Social media platform X has announced that Nigerian creators will no longer earn as much from foreign engagement on posts about events outside their country, starting Thursday.
Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, said the change aims to prioritise content that resonates with local and regional audiences.
The Elon Musk-owned platform will now give more weight to impressions generated within a creator’s home country.
Bier explained that the move is meant to encourage Nigerians to focus on national issues rather than foreign politics.
“While we appreciate everyone’s opinion on American politics, we hope this will disincentivise gaming the attention of U.S. or Japanese accounts and instead drive diverse conversations on the platform,” he said.
He added that X will reward content relevant to local audiences, inviting creators to build communities around issues that matter to their country and neighbouring regions.
The update follows a recent policy by X suspending revenue sharing for users posting AI-manipulated videos during wartime without labels, amid the ongoing conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran.
