Hajiya Kaltume Alumbe Jitami on behalf of the Guguwar Hausawa Tsantsa Movement, argues that the long-standing classification of Hausa and Fulani as a single entity has negatively affected Hausawa communities, particularly in areas of education, employment, political representation, and access to opportunities

A socio-cultural movement identifying itself as representatives of the Hausawa people has issued an open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, formally calling for the administrative and official separation of Hausa and Fulani identities in all federal records and government processes.
The letter, authored by Hajiya Kaltume Alumbe Jitami on behalf of the Guguwar Hausawa Tsantsa Movement, argues that the long-standing classification of Hausa and Fulani as a single entity has negatively affected Hausawa communities, particularly in areas of education, employment, political representation, and access to opportunities.
According to the group, decades of merged ethnic identification have led to what they describe as systemic disadvantages for Hausawa, prompting the demand for clear and distinct recognition of Hausa identity across all federal institutions and policies.
The movement stated that its members are prepared to offer collective political support to President Tinubu’s second-term ambition, but stressed that such backing would be conditional on the federal government granting and implementing the requested separation. They said this support would be reflected through coordinated nationwide voting by Hausawa communities.
In the letter, the group called on federal agencies and examination bodies—including WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, and other vocational and tertiary institutions—to adopt selection, admission, promotion, and appointment processes that clearly distinguish between Hausa and Fulani candidates. They also requested the issuance of an official government circular to enforce the policy uniformly.
The movement further urged that future population censuses in Northwestern states should distinctly enumerate Hausa and Fulani populations, arguing that accurate demographic data is essential for fair representation, resource distribution, and effective national planning.
Additionally, the group appealed to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and electoral bodies to ensure that ethnic identity is clearly reflected on national identity cards and voter registration documents, with “Hausa” explicitly stated to prevent misidentification.
While making the demands, the authors emphasized that the call for separation is not intended to incite hostility or ethnic conflict, but rather to promote justice, equity, and the protection of Hausawa rights within the Nigerian federation. They maintained that clear recognition of ethnic identities would help reduce tension, improve transparency, and strengthen national unity through lawful administrative reforms.
The group concluded by urging the Federal Government to treat the appeal with urgency, describing its implementation as a historic step toward restoring confidence among Hausawa communities. They reiterated their readiness to mobilize political support for President Tinubu once the separation of Hausa and Fulani identities is formally approved and applied across all federal records and processes.
The letter was signed by Hajiya Kaltume Alumbe Jitami on behalf of the Guguwar Hausawa Tsantsa Movement.
