The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the development in a statement issued by its spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Sunday.

Police in Cross River State have uncovered an illegal mortuary in Isong Inyang Community, Akamkpa Local Government Area, where eight decomposing bodies were discovered, and a mortician, Sunday Ben Reuben, was taken into custody as investigations continue.

The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the development in a statement issued by its spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Sunday.

According to the statement, operatives acted on credible intelligence about corpses allegedly being kept at an embalming facility located in Isong Inyang Community, along the Calabar–Ikom Highway, on February 13, 2026.

Police said officers moved to the location shortly after receiving the information and, on arrival, found eight dried bodies inside the premises.

Investigators identified the suspect as Sunday Ben Reuben, said to be from Nsit Ibom in Akwa Ibom State.

He was reportedly working as a mortician linked to Enghaut Company Mortuary at the time of the discovery.

The police said the suspect remains in custody while further inquiries are being conducted to establish the full circumstances of the case and ascertain if any laws were violated.

Residents were urged to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified claims, as the Command promised to provide updates once more details are confirmed.
