Two people were killed and three others wounded after falling debris from an intercepted ballistic missile struck an area on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi, authorities said on Thursday.
According to the Abu Dhabi Government Media Office, air defence systems successfully intercepted the incoming missile before it could reach its intended target.
However, fragments from the destroyed projectile fell into a nearby area, causing casualties and material damage.
“The incident resulted in the deaths of two unidentified individuals, three injuries, and damage to a number of cars,” the media office said in a statement posted on X.
Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they secured the area, treated the injured, and transported them to nearby hospitals for further medical care.
The condition of the wounded has not yet been disclosed.
Officials have not released the identities of the victims, and investigations are ongoing to determine further details about the attack, including the origin of the missile.
Authorities emphasized that the interception demonstrates the effectiveness of the country’s air defence systems, while also acknowledging the risks posed by falling debris in such incidents.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and adhere to safety instructions issued by relevant agencies.
