At least one person was reportedly killed while another person was severely injured after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in southern Nigeria.
The incident happened in the Egbelu Mgbaraja area of Ogbogoro Community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State.
The building collapsed on Monday around 2pm, making it the second building collapse in the area within the past one week, according to local news outlets.
A witness, Jonathan Obey, told PUNCH that the building collapsed while workers were on the second floor, resulting in the death of a young man simply identified as Udeme, from Akwa Ibom, a southeastern state.
Obey said that another worker narrowly escaped death but sustained serious injuries.
He attributed the collapse to the use of substandard materials, particularly criticising the foundation and structural supports.
“When we arrived, it was clear that substandard materials had been used,” The Punch newspaper quoted Obey as saying. “The foundation was intended for a two-storey structure, but low-quality reinforcement rods and insufficient cement were used. The decking lacked a central pillar and beam, which eventually led to the collapse.”
Reacting to the incident, the Rivers State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Evans Bipi, who visited the site, ordered it to be sealed, and declared the developer wanted.
Bipi condemned the developer’s negligence, and emphasized that the construction had been carried out without government approval and using substandard materials.
“We have made it clear that anyone building without approval will face consequences,” he said. “This site is sealed, and the developer is now wanted. They must answer for their role in this avoidable loss of life.”
The official warned that the government would take strong action against the developer.
“This is unacceptable. We will use this case as an example,” Bipi added.
He extended his condolences to the victim’s family, confirming that the deceased’s remains would be placed in a mortuary and the location publicly disclosed for the family’s access.
“This incident should serve as a warning to those who attempt to build without proper government approval,” the commissioner said.
On his part, Rivers State Commissioner for Special Duties Samuel Anya expressed condemned the developer’s decision to prioritize profit over safety.
“This is heartbreaking. Not only was the building of poor quality, but it also lacked proper approval. Now, someone has paid the ultimate price with their life,” Anya said. “The owner and engineer must be held accountable, as the government is committed to ensuring the safety of all residents.”
