ABEOKUTA, Nigeria – The Ogun State government has ordered the shutdown over the death of a Senior Secondary Student 2 (SS2) pupil of the school,
A school has been sealed in Nigeria’s Ogun State over the the death of a Senior Secondary School student.
The deceased, Monday Arijo, an SS2 student of Obada Grammar School, Obada, Idi-Emi, was reported to have been punished and beaten which allegedly led to his death.
The incident led to the arrest of the culprit teacher.
The school Principal, Mrs Tamrat Onaolapo was being questioned by the Ministry of Education in the southwestern state, for allowing corporal punishment to be used on the pupil against the established rules and regulations in the state, with the principal given 24 hours to explain her actions and why disciplinary actions should not be taken against her for acting against the instructions of constituted authority.
A letter of condolence was also sent to the bereaved family, commiserating with them on the death of their loving son and promising to get justice for the family.
In the letter, the deceased was described as an exceptional pupil who would be missed by his colleagues, the school, and the state at large.
The ministry prayed for requisite strength for the family to bear the irreplaceable loss as well as for the repose of the departed soul.
However, in a statement signed by Mr Lekan Adeniran, the Chief Press Secretary to the state governor, Dapo Abiodun on Tuesday, announced the closure of the school,with the official noting that the move was based on the directive of the Governor Abiodun.
The government stressed that the governor has also directed that a panel should be set up to investigate the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.
“The closure of the school was based on the directive of the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, who has also directed that a panel should be set up to investigate the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident,” the statement said. “The governor has promised that those liable by the outcome of the investigation will be made to face the full wrath of the law”.
