Kenya’s capital, Nairobi – Late on Thursday, three people—one of them a minor—were slain in Kenya amid anti-government demonstrations.

50 people were detained after they were discovered robbing a store in the town of Ongata Rongai in Kajiado County, about 17 kilometers (11 miles) south of Nairobi, where protesters and police engaged in combat.

A few minutes after midnight, gunfire resounded throughout the neighborhood as police persisted in trying to scatter the remaining demonstrators.

“We are working to clean the space and establish order again. Hussein Abduba, the superintendent of police for the region, told reporters, “We have also arrested fifty others, who have been taken to the police station for processing.”

Before others took advantage of the situation and started looting after breaking into establishments, stealing goods, and seriously damaging property, the marchers in Ongata Rongai were part of a bigger group opposing government tax hikes.

In Kenya, there have been numerous reports of extensive looting, especially in Nairobi’s Central Business District.

The owners of stores and companies in numerous East African cities, like as Mombasa and Kisumu, have had to close their doors for the entire week due to looting and arson.

Following violent anti-tax rallies that overran police, the Kenyan High Court on Thursday authorized the use of military action to reestablish order.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK), which filed a lawsuit to stop the deployment, received a favorable verdict the day before.

On Wednesday, President William Ruto stated that he will not sign the contentious Finance Bill 2024, which includes many tax increases, caving in to public pressure.

On Thursday, police were aided by heavily armed soldiers in preventing looting and damage as military vehicles and armored personnel carriers patrolled the streets.
