The suspect, aged between 30 and 40, reportedly raped a 14-year-old girl
Lagos – A man who raped a 14-year-old girl in Alakuko, Lagos Nigeria on Monday night, is now at large.
Akeem Akewe escaped when the police attempted to arrest him on Tuesday evening.
A source in the community told investigative news outlet, FIJ that some policemen arrived at the community around 6 pm on Tuesday evening, but failed to arrest Akewe.
“The police came around. But they could not identify him and were unfamiliar with the community,” the source, a female – who pleaded anonymity said.
“I heard from someone that he saw them and even got into a conversation with them. He was teasing them, but they still had no idea who he was. He used that opportunity to escape.”
She also told the investigative news outlet that she heard from some residents of the community that some landlords were harboring Akewe in their homes, and that residents failed to cooperate with the police.
”The policemen were around for about 30 minutes. They spoke with residents but nobody was willing to direct them to where he was.”
Lagos State Police Command’s spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that some policemen had visited the community on Tuesday evening and that no arrest was made because they couldn’t find Akewe.
“UPDATE: The house has been located in conjunction with @Lagosdsva. The landlord is not home. The suspect is not home, neither is the survivor nor her family home. The survivor’s mum has been contacted on phone but she is not willing to cooperate with the police. Also, everyone on the street has declined assisting the police in any form. Radio silence!
”Investigation is ongoing,” Hundeyin wrote on X.
Akeem Akewe, a resident of Akewe Street, Opeloyeru bus stop, Alakuko in Lagos, was accused of raping a 14-year-old girl.
Akewe reportedly lured the 14-year-old into his home and raped her on Monday night.
A neighbour pointed to Akewe as the pedophile who raped the 14-year-old in Alakuko on Monday night.
She also told FIJ that Akewe, aged between 30 and 40, lured the minor into his home and raped her. She added that the 14-year-old victim lives with her family, who are tenants in a house owned by Akewe’s parents.
“He is the landlord’s son. He lured her into his house and raped her on Monday night. Her mother has down syndrome and her father is uneducated,” she said.
“His parents are trying to bury the case because they know the condition her parents are in. She reported him to her parents yesterday, but his family are trying to beg her family to bury the case and forget about it.
“I called the police, but they are not saying anything. None of them has come to arrest him. They answered the call when I made it. I gave them all the information they requested. They should have taken action, but nothing has been done.”
In videos shared online, the 14-year-old victim had blood stains on her trousers and was in pains as she attempted to walk.
She was admitted to a hospital for medical treatment.
