Political allies of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and supporters of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara appear to be moving towards reconciliation as efforts to end their prolonged political differences gain momentum.
The latest development followed a meeting between Fubara and members of the Rainbow Coalition’s reconciliation committee at the Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
The meeting was the second between the governor and the Magnus Abe-led committee within two weeks.
The committee assured members of the political group that nobody would be victimised or discriminated against as part of the reconciliation process.
A statement issued by the Rivers State Government House said the meeting focused on finding ways to bring previously divided political leaders together and restore unity within the political family.
Speaking after the meeting, Abe said significant progress had been made and that the group was committed to ensuring that all members worked together.
He said the reconciliation represented a major change in Rivers State’s political atmosphere and expressed optimism that residents would welcome the development.
“We are all in agreement, and we have made very good progress,” Abe said, adding that the peace process would promote the unity, progress and prosperity of the state.
APC South-South Publicity Secretary, Samuel Nwanosike, who attended the meeting, praised Governor Fubara for welcoming the delegation and providing an opportunity for members of the group to engage with him.
Nwanosike said the latest meeting showed that the political family was coming together again and expressed confidence that the Rainbow Coalition would soon begin delivering what he described as the dividends of democracy to Rivers residents.
Another stakeholder, Ambrose Nwuzi, said those who supported Fubara had agreed to embrace peace, noting that political disagreements were normal in any society.
He added that the major reconciliation had already taken place and that the remaining step was for Wike, described as the overall leader of the group, to formally endorse the agreement.
Other members of the delegation included the APC governorship candidate in Rivers State, Kingsley Chinda, and Tamosisi Jaja.
The renewed reconciliation efforts could mark a significant shift in the political relationship between Wike and Fubara, whose rivalry has dominated political developments in Rivers State in recent years.
