An unidentified woman has been found dead on the premises of a church in the Obelewo area of Osogbo, Osun State, with her left wrist reportedly cut off.
The discovery has prompted a police investigation, as authorities work to identify the deceased and determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
According to the Osun State Police Command, detectives visited the scene after the woman’s body was discovered.
Preliminary findings indicated that she had allegedly been slaughtered before her left wrist was severed and taken away by unidentified individuals.
The police said the motive for the killing was still unknown and that investigators had yet to establish the identity of the victim or determine why she was targeted.
Police Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, said investigations were ongoing to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.
The deceased’s body was subsequently removed from the scene and taken to a hospital mortuary, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted to provide further information about the cause and manner of her death.
The State Command’s Investigation Department has commenced a formal investigation into the case. Detectives are expected to examine evidence from the scene, identify the deceased and trace the people responsible for the killing and removal of her wrist.
The incident has raised concerns among residents of the area, particularly because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the discovery and the mutilation of the victim’s body.
Authorities have not disclosed whether any suspects have been arrested in connection with the case.
The police are expected to provide further information as the investigation progresses.
The latest incident also recalls previous cases in parts of southwestern Nigeria involving the mutilation of victims.
In May 2015, a woman was reportedly found dead in a drainage along OGTV Road in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with parts of her body mutilated.
At the time, residents were shocked by the discovery, while the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death remained unclear.
However, police authorities have not established any connection between that earlier case and the latest incident in Osogbo.
The Osun State Police Command has urged members of the public who may have information about the identity of the deceased or the circumstances surrounding her death to assist investigators.
Further updates are expected as forensic examinations and investigations continue.
