The United States has announced it will withdraw from a joint continental defence board with Canada, accusing Ottawa of not meeting its military commitments.

On Monday, US Undersecretary of Defense Elbridge Colby said the Pentagon would suspend its participation in the Permanent Joint Board on Defense in order to “reassess” the value of the partnership.

The board, established during World War II, has long served as a platform for regional security cooperation.

However, ties between the two countries have become increasingly tense since US President Donald Trump returned to office for a second term in 2025.

“A strong Canada that prioritizes hard power over rhetoric benefits us all. Unfortunately, Canada has failed to make credible progress on its defense commitments,” Colby wrote on X.

“We can no longer ignore the gap between words and action. Allies must back their commitments with shared defence and security responsibilities.”
