A deadly explosion struck a central Moscow train station early Tuesday, killing a police officer and the attacker, who detonated a bomb next to a patrol car.
The blast occurred shortly after midnight local time (21:06 GMT Monday) near Savyolovsky train station, one of Moscow’s main railway hubs.
Two other officers were injured and are receiving medical treatment, according to the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Details on the assailant or the motive for the attack have not yet been released.
The ministry said the attacker approached traffic police officers in their patrol vehicle before detonating the explosive, killing himself and one officer.
Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened a case for attempted murder of law enforcement personnel and illegal possession of explosives. “One traffic policeman sustained fatal injuries at the scene, while two others were hospitalized for medical assistance,” the committee said, according to the state-run TASS news agency.
TASS images showed the police car severely damaged, with shattered windows and debris scattered around, though the vehicle did not catch fire.
The explosion comes amid a series of attacks in Moscow and coincides with the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Earlier this month, a top Russian military intelligence officer was shot and seriously wounded in an attack Moscow blamed on Kyiv. In December 2025, a car bomb killed Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Russian General Staff’s training department.
Two days later, another blast killed three people, including two police officers, nearby. Ukraine previously claimed responsibility for a 2024 attack that killed Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s nuclear, biological, and chemical protection forces, via a bomb hidden on an electric scooter outside his apartment.
