Fresh hope for political reconciliation has surfaced in Rivers State following President Bola Tinubu’s intervention in the ongoing crisis between key state leaders.

A source at the Villa told Vanguard that the President held late-night talks in Abuja with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and other influential political figures from the state.

Although the details of the discussions remain undisclosed, they are believed to focus on resolving the prolonged tensions that have rocked the state’s political landscape. Reports indicate that Governor Fubara accompanied Wike to his residence in Guzape, Abuja, after the meeting.

Unverified sources suggested that Fubara appealed to Wike, pledging to avoid actions that could be perceived as disrespectful, signalling a potential thaw in their strained relationship.

The latest development comes after months of heightened tension between Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, which erupted shortly after the current governor assumed office. The fallout has split the Rivers State House of Assembly into rival factions, sparked impeachment threats, prolonged court battles, and led to repeated legislative shutdowns.

Observers attribute the conflict to a struggle for control over the state’s political direction and party structures. Previous reconciliation efforts by party leaders failed to fully bridge the divide, raising concerns over governance and stability in the oil-rich state.

President Tinubu’s intervention is widely seen as a strategic effort to restore peace, stabilise governance, and prevent further escalation ahead of future political engagements in Rivers State and within the ruling party.
