Gaya, who represented Kano South Senatorial District in the previous term, tendered his resignation in a letter dated April 5, 2026, addressed to the APC Ward Chairman in Gaya Local Government Area. The letter stated that his resignation takes immediate effect.

Kano State’s All Progressives Congress (APC) has suffered another major blow with the defection of Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Gaya, who represented Kano South Senatorial District in the previous term, tendered his resignation in a letter dated April 5, 2026, addressed to the APC Ward Chairman in Gaya Local Government Area. The letter stated that his resignation takes immediate effect.
Explaining his decision, Gaya said it followed “careful reflection and wide consultation,” adding that leaving the APC aligns with both his personal convictions and the best interests of his constituents.
“I extend my sincere gratitude to the party for the platform it provided me and for the cooperation and camaraderie extended over the years,” he wrote.
The resignation was formally acknowledged by Gaya Arewa Ward Chairman, Adam A. Adam.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday about his political future, Gaya confirmed his move to the ADC, emphasising that he maintains cordial ties with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna.
He said the trio plans to work together to strengthen the ADC and ensure its success in Kano State.
Gaya’s defection comes shortly after Nasiru Gawuna, the APC’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate in Kano, left the party last week.
