Iranian authorities have detained four people accused of trying to “disrupt the country’s political and social order” and acting “for the benefit” of Israel and the United States during last month’s antigovernment protests.

The arrests were carried out on Sunday and included three well-known reformist politicians, according to Iranian media.

Those detained were named as Azar Mansouri, head of Iran’s Reform Front; Mohsen Aminzadeh, a former diplomat; and Ebrahim Asgharzadeh, a former lawmaker. The identity of the fourth suspect has not been disclosed.

Iran’s judiciary said the group had been involved in “organising and leading extensive activities aimed at destabilising the political and social situation” at a time when the country was facing what it described as “military threats” from Israel and the United States, according to the official Mizan news agency.

It also alleged that the suspects sought to justify the actions of what it called “terrorist foot soldiers on the streets.”

Iran’s Reform Front confirmed the arrests in a statement posted on X, saying Mansouri was taken from her home under a judicial order by intelligence officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The group added that the IRGC had also summoned other senior members, including its deputy chairman, Mohsen Armin, and its secretary, Badral Sadat Mofidi.

The arrests come amid widespread anger in Iran over the deaths of thousands of people during the January unrest.

The protests began in Tehran over a worsening economic crisis before spreading nationwide and developing into a broader anti government movement.
