The hospital said its medical team made every effort to save her life but were ultimately unsuccessful.

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abuja has clarified the circumstances surrounding the death of rising singer Ifunanya Nwagene, who passed away on Saturday after suffering a snake bite.

The hospital said its medical team made every effort to save her life but were ultimately unsuccessful.

Nwagene, also known as Nanyah, was a soprano with the Amemuso Choir. Her death was confirmed on Sunday by the choir in a statement posted on Facebook, signed by Music Director Sam Ezugwu.

The statement described her passing as a major loss to Abuja’s growing music scene, noting she was a promising talent on the verge of wider recognition.

Burial arrangements will be announced later.
“A rising star, Ifunanya was on the cusp of sharing her incredible talent with the world. Her voice and spirit will be deeply missed,” the choir said.

In a separate statement on Sunday evening, FMC management expressed condolences to the singer’s family, stating that the loss of a loved one is never easy.

The hospital said its team responded promptly when Nwagene was brought in, providing immediate and appropriate care.

Treatment included resuscitation efforts, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and the administration of polyvalent snake antivenom.

FMC noted that Nwagene suffered severe neurotoxic complications from the snake bite.

Despite rapid evaluation and attempts to stabilize her condition for transfer to the Intensive Care Unit, her condition suddenly deteriorated before the transfer could occur.

Medical personnel performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other life-saving measures but were unable to revive her.

The hospital also addressed circulating social media claims that anti-snake venom was unavailable or that medical staff responded inadequately.

FMC described these claims as false, affirming that appropriate medication was available and administered.

“The claims of non-availability of anti-snake venom and inadequate response are unfounded and do not reflect the reality of the situation.

We are committed to transparency and integrity in our practices and will continue to pursue excellence in patient care,” the statement read.

FMC reiterated its commitment to quality care and urged the public to rely on verified information rather than social media speculation, noting that it remains open to further inquiries or clarification.
