Envoys of United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have held talks on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, amid reports that the signing of an $800 billion “prosperity plan” for Ukraine’s reconstruction was postponed due to tensions over Greenland.
Speaking on Wednesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Moscow would not comment on the discussions in Davos but emphasized the importance for Russia of being informed about talks involving the United States, European leaders, and Ukraine.
Russia’s state-run news agency TASS reported that US special envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and Russian special envoy Kirill Dmitriev met for more than two hours on Tuesday during the forum.
The agency quoted Witkoff as describing the talks as “very positive.”
Witkoff later told The Associated Press that he and Kushner were planning to meet President Putin and the Ukrainian delegation on Thursday.
The Kremlin confirmed that a meeting in Moscow was included on Putin’s schedule.
Meanwhile, the UK’s Financial Times reported that tensions within the NATO alliance over Trump’s push to acquire Greenland had disrupted plans to sign a Ukraine reconstruction agreement at Davos.
The so-called “prosperity plan,” to be agreed between Ukraine, Europe, and the United States, was originally expected to be finalized at the forum.
The newspaper noted that the agreement has not been abandoned and could still be signed at a later date. However, one official told the Financial Times that there was little appetite for a high-profile agreement involving Trump at the moment.
Trump has unsettled transatlantic relations by repeatedly threatening to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, citing what he claims are security concerns.
