At least 22 people have been killed after a construction crane collapsed onto a passenger train in northeast Thailand.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, about 230 kilometres (143 miles) northeast of Bangkok. The train was travelling from the Thai capital to Ubon Ratchathani province.
According to foreign media reports, the train was passing beneath a high-speed rail construction site when a crane operating overhead fell onto the tracks.
“The train was derailed after striking the crane, and a brief fire broke out,” Cheng said.
Initial reports put the death toll at four, but the figure quickly rose to 12. Thai police later confirmed to journalists that at least 22 people had been killed, with the number expected to increase.
Police said at least 55 people were injured, while rescue teams continue to search the accident site. The fire has since been extinguished and emergency response operations are ongoing.
