North Korea on Monday blasted the United States for what it called “shameless” actions that undermine the United Nations, accusing Washington of committing a “hideous criminal act” that, it said, should be the main focus of debate at the UN rather than Pyongyang’s alleged sanctions violations.
In a statement from its mission to the UN in New York, carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency, Pyongyang said, “What should be questioned and openly discussed in the UN as the most important pending issue is the hideous criminal act of the US.”
The statement accused Washington of despising the UN and of “shameless illegal and immoral acts” aimed at mocking the international organisation for unilateral and self-serving purposes.
It did not specify the act in question but came shortly after the United States captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, an operation North Korea has described as a dangerous precedent.
The remarks also followed President Donald Trump’s announcement that the United States would withdraw from several UN organisations, a move Pyongyang cited as further evidence of US disregard for the international body.
North Korea remains under UN Security Council sanctions over its nuclear and missile programmes, but its latest statement highlights ongoing tensions with the United States and its hostility toward American influence in global institutions.
