The Federal Government has disclosed that it has approached Turkey for assistance in addressing Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, as President Bola Tinubu reassured that ongoing security measures would yield results with time.
President Tinubu stated this on Friday during a meeting with a delegation of the Christian Association of Nigeria, led by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, at his Lagos residence.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President urged CAN to collaborate with his administration to realise the nation’s collective aspirations.
He said although the country remains largely peaceful, vast ungoverned spaces continue to pose serious security challenges.
“The mood of the nation is peaceful, although our ungoverned spaces are so large. The challenge is real, but we will surmount it. We are very religious. We are prayer warriors. We need your focus, vigilance, and cooperation,” Tinubu said.
The President also disclosed plans to strengthen policing at the grassroots, noting that state and community policing would soon become a reality.
“Community and State Police will be a reality once the National Assembly completes the required legislative inputs,” he said.
Tinubu explained that limitations in military hardware acquisition were slowing down efforts to boost security operations.
“Military hardware is difficult to replace. It is expensive and not available off the shelf,” he said.
He added that while Nigeria had placed orders for four attack helicopters from the United States, delivery would take time.
“Our orders for four attack helicopters from the United States of America will take some time to arrive. We have approached Turkey for assistance,” the President said.
