Blessing Onuh, a member of the House of Representatives, has sounded a fresh alarm over the rising violence in Otupko/Ohimini Federal Constituency of Benue State.
Onuh described the attacks on the communities as tantamount to genocide.
Speaking during plenary on Thursday, the lawmaker said villages that were once peaceful have been turned into killing fields by heavily armed assailants.
She cautioned that labelling the attacks as mere banditry would understate the severity of the violence against innocent civilians.
“I am from Benue State, Mr Speaker. I commend you for dedicating this week to addressing the insecurity that continues to plague our nation. I also align strongly with the contributions of the previous speaker, which I will further emphasise,” Onuh said.
“Years ago, I could confidently say that such violence could never reach my constituency, Otupko/Ohimini. But today, what was once a peaceful community has become a den for criminals.
“We can no longer call this banditry. Our country is under attack. Our country is under siege. This is not banditry it is terrorism at its highest form. It is genocide.”
