The Oduduwa/Yoruba Nation Youth Leadership – Home and Diaspora has released a powerful joint statement addressing the escalating security crisis in Nigeria and the growing international focus on the country’s instability, including recent comments attributed to former U.S. President Donald J. Trump regarding terrorist activities.

According to the group, Yoruba youths both within Nigeria and across the world have been following the global reactions closely.

While they maintain neutrality regarding the political positions of international figures, the youth leaders expressed appreciation for the heightened global concern for vulnerable populations in Nigeria particularly Christians and other civilians frequently targeted by extremist violence.

They acknowledged international voices that continue to shed light on the suffering endured by ordinary Nigerians.

Yoruba Youths Condemn Terrorism and Lament Governance Failures

The statement, titled “Joint Press Statement,” delivers a firm condemnation of terrorism in all forms. It highlights the relentless wave of violence threatening communities across Yorubaland, including:

  • Kidnappings and ambushes along highways
  • Raids on villages resulting in mass casualties
  • Attacks on farmers, traditional rulers, and community defenders
  • Destruction of farms, homes, and economic livelihoods
  • Intimidation campaigns aimed at driving indigenous residents from their ancestral lands

Describing these acts as “criminal, destructive, and intolerable,” the youth leaders criticized the Nigerian government for its failure to protect citizens.

They referenced widespread concerns voiced by Nigerians, international analysts, and observers that elements within the country’s security and governance structures may have been compromised or influenced by extremist forces. Such a possibility, they stated, represents a severe breach of public trust.

“A government that cannot guarantee security forfeits its moral authority,” the statement reads.

Declaration on Self-Determination: A Call Rooted in Law

The Oduduwa/Yoruba Nation youth leaders declared that the 1914 amalgamation which they emphasize was never agreed upon by Yoruba ancestors has run its historical and moral course. They argued that the repeated failures of the Nigerian state, including injustice, systemic insecurity, ethnic discrimination, corruption, and state-enabled terrorism, have made a continued union untenable.

They reaffirmed that the Yoruba pursuit of self-determination is:

  • Peaceful
  • Lawful
  • Internationally recognized
  • And non-negotiable

The statement cites global legal frameworks supporting the right to self-governance, including:

  • United Nations Charter (Articles 1 and 55)
  • African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Article 20)
  • Universal principles of human dignity and freedom

The group clarified that Yoruba nationalism is a democratic movement, not a rebellion, and that the Yoruba people reject any attempt to impose extremist ideology, religious coercion, or anti-democratic practices on their land.

Appeal to the International Community

The youth leaders called on global partners, institutions, and human rights organizations to:

  • Recognize Yoruba self-determination efforts
  • Monitor security lapses and human rights violations across Nigeria
  • Engage in preventive diplomacy to protect Yoruba communities
  • Support peaceful pathways toward democratic self-governance

They emphasized that the Yoruba seek cooperation—not foreign domination, interference, or exploitation. Their goal, they noted, is to foster partnerships rooted in stability, justice, and human dignity.

Message to Yoruba People Worldwide

In an address to Yoruba people globally, the youth leadership emphasized unity, cultural pride, and civic participation. They called on Yoruba citizensscholars, professionals, traders, elders, activists, and youth to uphold dignity and remain steadfast in the collective struggle for justice and freedom.

They urged supporters of the Oduduwa/Yoruba Nation cause to:

  • Remain peaceful and law-abiding
  • Engage in lawful advocacy, public enlightenment, and democratic action
  • Use platforms such as petitions, diplomatic channels, and public dialogue
  • Stay united through culture, education, and strategic organization
  • Reject violence and avoid provocations

“We are many. We are informed. We are prepared,” the statement declares, emphasizing that the movement’s objective is peace and justice not conflict.

Final Declaration

The press statement concludes with a pledge of unwavering commitment to securing a peaceful, prosperous, and sovereign Yoruba future.

“Our destiny is not for sale. Our freedom is our birthright. The world is watching, and history is recording,” the statement reads.

The leaders affirmed that the Yoruba people will rise through law, truth, and steadfast determination.
