Bishop Oyemade McCaulay’s contribution to the Yoruba Nation Struggle is immeasurable. He embodied patience, commitment, and sacrifice, holding the home front together through the turbulent times of the movement.

The Yoruba nation mourns the passing of Bishop Oyemade McCaulay, who died on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.

To put it as simply and correctly as possible, this man was the SOUL of the Yoruba Nation Struggle at the Homeland level. Elekun Eko, as he was fondly called, was, in all intents and purposes, the Chairman of the Elekuns.

We willingly allowed him to play that role because he was just the best, the most committed, and the most sacrificial. Bishop held the home front together because he was more patient than all the Elekuns.

In reorganizing the Struggle, the Leader created the Yoruba Self Determination Movement (YSDM), a name we will all be bearing at each State level from now on.

A big Council and Executive Committee were created but dominated by Yoruba in the Diaspora who saw themselves as Lords of all. At a point, the Elekuns were invited as “Observers”. We were appalled by the overarching interest in creating a huge bureaucracy that had nothing to do with the Struggle.

The Homeland People saw a lot of Yoruba in Diaspora who were ignorant of what the situation on the ground at home is. We didn’t see an appreciation of the challenges the Struggle faced or specific strategies to overcome them.

Many of them had not spent 10 days in their villages or Local Government Areas (LGA) in Nigeria in 10 years and wanted to direct the Struggle from their safe havens in the US and Europe. Nobody was talking about the strategies for achieving the Yoruba Nation. They were instead more interested in creating “positions”. The Homeland Elekuns were appalled.

Bishop Oyemade McCaulay’s contribution to the Yoruba Nation Struggle is immeasurable. He embodied patience, commitment, and sacrifice, holding the home front together through the turbulent times of the movement.

His leadership was marked by a deep understanding of the local challenges and a steadfast commitment to the cause, which often contrasted sharply with the approach of the Diaspora leadership.

His passing leaves a void that will be difficult to fill. The Yoruba Nation Struggle has lost a guiding light, a leader who understood the heartbeat of the homeland and who worked tirelessly to ensure that the movement remained focused on its core objectives.

As we mourn his loss, we must also honor his legacy by continuing the fight with the same level of dedication and selflessness that he exemplified.

The future of the Yoruba Nation Struggle now rests on our shoulders. We must strive to bridge the gap between the homeland and the Diaspora, to create a unified front that is both strategic and grounded in the realities of our people.

Let us remember Bishop Oyemade McCaulay’s words and actions as we move forward, ensuring that his spirit of patience, commitment, and sacrifice continues to guide us.

In this time of grief, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and all who were touched by his remarkable life. Bishop Oyemade McCaulay may have left us, but his legacy will endure, inspiring future generations to keep the flame of the Yoruba Nation Struggle burning bright.
