ILORIN, Nigeria – A 41-year-old man was confirmed dead after a residential building was gutted by fire in Nigeria’s southwestern state of Kwara, the fire department in the state said.
The deceased, identified as AbdulFatai from Ile Alate, Abayawo compound in Ilorin, lost his life in the early hours fire outbreak at No. 158, Ile Alaparun Isale, Alore, Ilorin, Kwara State. AbdulFatai had been visiting a friend when the incident occurred.
Firefighters responded swiftly to the distress call at 02:07 hours on Monday, December 9, 2024, a spokesman for the Kwara State Fire Service said.
Despite the blaze engulfing several rooms, the fire service team managed to save 30 rooms out of a total of 35, with five rooms completely destroyed, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, Head of Media and Publicity for the fire department said in a statement.
βThe fire was reported at a dwelling of about 35 rooms. Upon arrival, the fire had already spread to some rooms. The firefighters worked tirelessly to contain and extinguish the blaze, preventing it from spreading further. Unfortunately, five rooms were affected, while 30 rooms were successfully saved,β the statement said.
“The fire claimed the life of AbdulFatai, who was unable to escape due to the heavy smoke.
βHe was found unconscious and later confirmed dead. His body was handed over to his family following the firefighting operation.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire was caused by spontaneous ignition in a room containing combustible materials, including petrol, batteries, and a tire inflator engine,” the statement added.
