ILORIN – Nigeria’s Kwara State Government has sanctioned a school teacher accused of mistreating a National Youth Service Corps(NYSC) member assigned to Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, the capital of the the southwestern state.

Last week’s Thursday, the corps member (name withheld), was allegedly assaulted and stripped by some teachers for reportedly failing to greet them properly when the corps member went to the school to pick up her monthly clearance letter.

However, in a Wednesday statement, the Press Secretary of the Teaching Service Commission, Bola Onile revealed that the investigative panel found one Hajia Hamzat Fatimoh Nike guilty of fighting on duty, using foul language, insubordination, and disrespecting the national identity represented by the corps members’ uniform.

“The Kwara State Government has sanctioned the school teacher accused of maltreating a youth corps member posted to Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin,” said the statement.

“In a joint statement by the Commissioner of Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, and the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission, Mallam Bello Tauheed Abubakar, the government said the investigative panel set up on the matter found Hajia Hamzat Fatimoh Nike guilty of fighting on duty, use of foul language, insubordination, and disrespect for the national identity which the uniform of the corp members represent.

“Her behavior contravenes public service rules, and she has therefore been demoted by two-grade levels, according to the statement.

“The teacher is also to be transferred out of her current school as well as undergo counseling sessions, the statement added.

“‘The State Government will not tolerate such abuse under any guise. The government deeply regrets the action of the teacher and reassures the management of the National Youth Service Corps that the development did not represent the people of the state, and it will not happen again’, the statement said.”
