Fifty-three Nigerian nationals have been arrested in Ghana following a major intelligence-led operation targeting suspected cybercrime centres across the Greater Accra Region.

The arrests were confirmed on Sunday by Ghana’s Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, who said the coordinated raids were aimed at protecting Ghana’s cyberspace and maintaining its international digital reputation.

Intelligence gathered over the past 48 hours by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) revealed several locations allegedly used as cybercrime hubs in East Legon Hills, Afienya, Kwabenya, Weija, and Tuba.

Investigators also found that young men, mostly foreign nationals, were being exploited and coerced by suspected kingpins to carry out cybercrime activities.

Acting on CSA intelligence, a joint security team including operatives from the National Security Operations, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the Ghana Police Service SWAT Unit, and the CSA conducted simultaneous raids on January 16 and 17, 2026.

Nine Nigerian nationals were arrested as principal suspects linked to the planning and execution of cybercrime operations.

An additional forty-four Nigerian nationals, believed to be victims of human trafficking and cyber exploitation, were rescued from various apartments.

Investigators found them operating laptops in multiple locations, suggesting the presence of an organised cybercrime network.

During the raids, authorities recovered 62 laptops, 52 mobile phones, and two pump-action guns, believed to have been used in the commission of cyber-related offences.

A breakdown of the arrests shows five in East Legon Hills, eleven in Afienya, ten in Kwabenya, ten in Weija, and seventeen in Tuba, bringing the total number of detainees to fifty-three.

Minister Samuel Nartey George said all the arrested individuals have been profiled and handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for safekeeping and further investigation.

He warned foreign nationals entering Ghana to be cautious and to verify any claims made by compatriots promising jobs or quick financial opportunities, noting that previous suspects in similar operations have been prosecuted or extradited to Nigeria in collaboration with INTERPOL.

“Protecting Ghana’s cyber image internationally is non-negotiable,” the minister said, commending the CSA and partner law enforcement agencies for their efforts.
