Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has said he left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because of persistent internal crises and ongoing legal battles that threatened the party’s stability and his ability to govern effectively.

He officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, a move announced by state Deputy Governor Mani Mummuni after a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Gusau.

In a statement on Tuesday, the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Idris, said the decision was taken in the best interest of Zamfara State, following consultations with political stakeholders amid the lingering PDP disputes.

“Yesterday (Monday), Governor Dauda Lawal officially decamped from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, a decision reached and endorsed by all relevant stakeholders in Zamfara State,” Idris said.

The spokesperson noted that Governor Lawal had remained committed to the PDP and made repeated efforts to reconcile its warring factions, but all attempts at unity and out-of-court settlements failed.

“Governor Lawal worked diligently to facilitate reconciliation within the PDP, ensuring it remained unified and capable of fielding candidates for future elections.

“Efforts to achieve peace, reconciliation, and out-of-court settlements proved difficult, leading to legal battles with implications for leaders contesting elections in 2027,” Idris said.

Idris also highlighted that Lawal was the last PDP governor seeking a second term to remain in the party despite the turmoil.

“Governor Lawal stood firm until the very end, awaiting the outcome of the Appeal Court judgment, hoping party leaders would act responsibly. The judgment marked the end of his stay in the PDP.

“The appellate judgment ended Governor Lawal’s stay in the PDP, as he prioritised the interests of Zamfara State by joining the APC to sustain the Zamfara Rescue and Rebuild mission,” Idris added.
