A man was killed and his wife critically injured on Thursday morning when a granite-laden truck toppled onto their Toyota saloon at Eleko Junction along the Lekki–Ajah Expressway in Lagos State.
LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, said preliminary reports indicate that the articulated truck, heavily loaded with granite and travelling at high speed from the Epe axis, suffered a brake failure while approaching the junction.
The failure reportedly caused the truck to veer off course and collide violently with the car travelling from Ajah towards Epe.
The impact caused the truck to overturn, trapping the man inside the wreckage.
Officials from LASTMA and the Federal Road Safety Corps, assisted by bystanders, rescued the victims.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The truck driver fled the scene immediately after the crash. Officers from the Akodo Police Division provided security during the rescue operation.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the accident as avoidable, urging motorists and truck operators to maintain their vehicles properly and drive responsibly.
