The anniversary recalls mass protests over rising living costs, corruption, and tax increases that led to the storming of Parliament and the withdrawal of new taxes.

Kenyan police deployed heavily across Nairobi on Thursday and blocked major roads to prevent demonstrations marking two years since the 2024 “Gen Z” anti-government protests.
The anniversary recalls mass protests over rising living costs, corruption, and tax increases that led to the storming of Parliament and the withdrawal of new taxes.
June 25 has since become a symbol of youth-led resistance against President William Ruto’s government.
Police used tear gas to disperse small gatherings, while activists laid flowers outside Parliament in memory of those killed during the protests.
Human rights groups say more than 120 people have died in protest-related unrest over the past two years.
President Ruto has defended the government’s response, saying Kenyans have the right to protest peacefully but warning against violence and destruction of property.
The government has also announced compensation for more than 1,100 victims of protest-related violence.
The demonstrations highlight continuing public frustration over economic challenges, corruption, and police conduct ahead of next year’s elections.
