A Nigerian national, Osemwengie Irorere, 46, was shot dead at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in Toronto, Canada, marking the city’s first homicide of 2026, police confirmed.
Toronto Police said the shooting occurred around 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, at the busy terminal near Yorkdale Road and Allen Road.
According to authorities, both the victim and the suspect had boarded a GO bus when the suspect suddenly opened fire, striking Irorere before fleeing on foot. Emergency responders found him with a gunshot wound, but he was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts.
Police later tracked down and arrested the suspect, Tyrel Gibson, a 40-year-old Toronto resident, and recovered a firearm. Gibson has been charged with first-degree murder and was scheduled to appear at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on Monday, January 5.
On Wednesday, January 7, Toronto Police formally identified the victim as Osemwengie Irorere of Nigeria, highlighting the international dimension of the killing.
The incident has raised concerns about gun violence in public transit spaces, particularly at one of Toronto’s busiest transportation hubs.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Homicide and Missing Persons Unit or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
“This is Toronto’s first homicide of 2026,” the police statement said.
