Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it has advised diplomatic missions to urgently evacuate their staff from Kyiv amid fears that Moscow could launch major strikes on the Ukrainian capital if Ukraine attempts to disrupt Russia’s May 9 Victory Day celebrations.
In a video shared on Telegram on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called on diplomats to take seriously a warning issued earlier this week by Russia’s Defence Ministry.
The warning stated that Russia could carry out retaliatory strikes if Ukraine targets events marking the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, including the annual military parade in Moscow’s Red Square.
Zakharova urged foreign governments and international organisations to ensure the immediate evacuation of embassy and diplomatic personnel from Kyiv because of what she described as the “inevitability” of a Russian military response in the event of Ukrainian attacks during the commemorations
She also accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of making what she described as “aggressive and threatening statements” about disrupting the celebrations during a meeting of the European Political Community held in Armenia on Monday.
According to Zakharova, several European Union countries attended the meeting, but none criticised Zelenskyy over the remarks.
