Obi, in a post on his verified X account on Monday, said the president’s lengthy absence amounts to neglect rather than governance

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu for spending extended periods abroad, describing it as a failure of leadership.

Obi, in a post on his verified X account on Monday, said the president’s lengthy absence amounts to neglect rather than governance.

He highlighted that, unlike leaders in other developing countries who step up during crises, Nigerians have had to rely on foreign media and American officials for information on key events, rather than hearing directly from their president.

Obi noted that Tinubu spent 196 days outside Nigeria in 2025 alone, more than he was present in the country, and has remained silent since December.

He stated, “In Nigeria, following U.S. military strikes on our soil, our President remained silent. Instead of speaking directly to the nation, Nigerians learned of these critical events from foreign media, American officials, and vague messages from presidential aides known for propaganda, rather than from their own leader.

“In the midst of this crisis, where has our President been? In 2025 alone, he spent 196 days abroad—more time outside the country than within it—while Nigeria faced serious challenges.

“Since December 2025, Nigerians have not heard from their President. Reports indicate he chose a holiday in Europe while the nation entered the New Year marked by hunger, anxiety, and uncertainty. There was no New Year address, no national broadcast, no leadership voice to reassure or guide the people.

“This is not governance; this is neglect. The President was seen abroad again for another summit, absent at a time when the country needs him most. Earlier this year, he even sent an AI-generated image to the nation instead of addressing his people directly.”
