The Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme (SCTP) has achieved another medical milestone after successfully separating Filipino twins Olivia and Gianna, according to SPA, cited by Kazinform News Agency.

The operation was performed at King Abdullah Specialized Children’s Hospital (KASCH), part of King Abdulaziz Medical City under the Ministry of National Guard in Riyadh.

A total of 22 consultants, specialists, nurses, and technical staff took part in the six-hour procedure, ensuring high levels of precision and safety throughout the surgery.

The twins were joined at the chest and abdomen and shared a liver, with possible involvement of part of the intestines.

One of the twins also had congenital heart defects, which increased the medical risks.

This marks the fourth successful separation of conjoined twins from the Philippines under the SCTP and the 72nd such operation carried out by the programme, which has a 35-year history and has reviewed 158 cases from 28 countries across five continents.

Earlier cases have included even longer and more complex procedures, with Saudi medical teams previously completing a separation surgery lasting nearly 13 hours.
