Governor Monday Okpebholo has condemned the attack on members of the African Democratic Congress in Edo State, describing the incident as an internal party conflict that spiralled out of control.

In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, the governor sympathised with the affected ADC members and faulted what he called the exploitation of Edo’s peaceful atmosphere to foment unrest.

He said it was disturbing that individuals allegedly attempted to import thugs and miscreants into the state under the cover of political engagement.

“As peace-loving citizens, we categorically condemn and will not tolerate the importation of thugs and miscreants from outside the state under the guise of political activity,” he said.

Okpebholo stressed that as Chief Security Officer of the state, he would not allow Edo to become a theatre for political violence.

While noting that the exact motive for the attack remains uncertain, he maintained that it appears designed to discredit the state and undermine its standing as one of the most peaceful in the country.

The governor declared that no form of political blackmail would diminish the backing his administration enjoys from Edo residents.

According to him, politics should revolve around performance, grassroots connection and continuous efforts to earn the trust of the people.

“That is the foundation of our credibility, and we are determined to uphold it,” he added.

He also condemned the use of violence by politicians seeking electoral advantage, describing such conduct as a betrayal of public trust and democratic values.

Okpebholo stated that his party remains open to constructive opposition and would not be cowed by blackmail or what he termed self-orchestrated attacks.

Although he sympathised with ADC members, he advised the party against directing blame outward, suggesting that the crisis appears rooted in internal disagreements.

He urged residents to remain calm and continue to preserve the peace for which Edo is known.

“Edo remains a peaceful state, and that legacy must be preserved,” he said.

The governor further warned opposition parties to settle internal disputes before staging public events, cautioning that any attempt to incite violence under the guise of politics would be decisively addressed.

He called on the police and other security agencies to stay alert and closely monitor political activities to forestall further escalation, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
