Piero Corvetto announced on Tuesday via social media that he was stepping down as head of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), the government agency responsible for organising elections.

The head of Peru’s election authority has resigned following widespread frustration over the country’s chaotic general election earlier this month, as vote counting continues.
Piero Corvetto announced on Tuesday via social media that he was stepping down as head of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), the government agency responsible for organising elections.
In a letter to the National Board of Justice (JNJ), Corvetto rejected claims of irregularities raised by some politicians.
However, he said his decision to resign was aimed at restoring public confidence ahead of a likely second round of the presidential election scheduled for June 7.
The first round, held on April 12, was affected by logistical problems that forced authorities to extend voting hours in Lima and other areas.
Election observers acknowledged shortcomings in the process but said there is no solid evidence of fraud.
Meanwhile, the National Jury of Elections (JNE) stated that final results will be announced by May 15, with the top two candidates moving on to the runoff.
