The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) branch of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has announced the suspension of its seven-day strike and directed teachers in public primary and secondary schools in the territory to resume work today.

The FCT NUT Chairman, Comrade Mohammed Abdullahi Shafas, made the announcement on Sunday evening while briefing journalists after the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) meeting held at the Teachers’ House in Gwagwalada.

He said the decision followed an emergency SWEC meeting convened to review the intervention of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike in the dispute that began on April 20, 2026.

According to him, out of the N5 billion owed to teachers, the minister approved the release of N2 billion monthly from internally generated revenue (IGR), in addition to the 40 percent peculiar allowance and the settlement of outstanding entitlements for primary school teachers.

Shafas also stated that on the issue of promotion, Wike pledged to engage the Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission to remove the “vacancy” requirement for teachers’ promotion and to review the 2024 promotion exercise.

“After extensive deliberation, the State Wing Executive Council resolved that all primary and secondary school teachers are directed to resume work on Monday, April 27, 2026,” he said.

The union stressed that no teacher would be penalised for participating in the strike and added that it would reconsider its position if the FCT Administration fails to honour the agreements reached.

While commending teachers for their solidarity, the union reaffirmed its commitment to improving their working conditions in the FCT.

Recall that teachers across the six area councils of the FCT embarked on an indefinite strike on April 20, 2026, over unmet demands and outstanding entitlements, following directives from the NUT leadership.

Earlier, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike had met with the union’s leadership, assuring them that the government would address their demands.

The union had said it would consult its members before taking a final decision on the matter.
