Rutte told Fox News that about 500 U.S. planes departed from bases in Italy in support of “Operation Epic Fury,” the U.S.-led campaign against Iran.

Italy has rejected claims by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that hundreds of U.S. aircraft flew from American bases in Italy to support military operations against Iran.

Rutte told Fox News that about 500 U.S. planes departed from bases in Italy in support of “Operation Epic Fury,” the U.S.-led campaign against Iran.

However, Italy’s government said it only approved technical and logistical support flights, not combat missions.

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said Italy acted within its legal obligations and authorized only non-combat activities.

He criticized Rutte’s remarks as misleading, arguing they blurred the line between support operations and direct military action.

The comments have sparked political debate in Italy, with opposition leaders demanding further clarification from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her government.
