A Russian missile strike on a town in eastern Ukraine killed four people and injured 18 others, authorities said on Monday.
Merefa is located southwest of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, which has been heavily targeted by Russian attacks during the more than four years of the invasion.
Kharkiv regional governor Oleh Synegubov said the strike hit the town of Merefa, adding that the victims included men aged 50 and 63, and women aged 41 and 52.
He also reported that an apartment building, four shops, and a car service station were damaged, with emergency teams working at the scene.
Russian forces have been trying to seize more territory in the Kharkiv region, from which they were pushed back by Ukrainian troops in 2022.
The attack occurred as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attended a summit with European leaders in Armenia, traditionally seen as an ally of Russia, while Ukrainian drones also reached Moscow on Monday.
Meanwhile, US-led diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict have been overshadowed by the ongoing war in the Middle East.
