AFC Backs UEFA, CONCACAF Opposition to FIFA Investor Proposal

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has joined UEFA and CONCACAF in opposing FIFA’s proposal to allow private investors to acquire stakes in its major competitions.

In a statement released on Friday, the AFC said it stood in solidarity with the two confederations, arguing that the proposal lacks the broad support needed to move forward.

The body stressed that the FIFA World Cup derives its strength from the participation of all confederations and leading football nations, warning against any move that could affect the competition’s global unity.

The AFC also criticised FIFA for introducing the proposal without adequate consultation with key stakeholders.

According to the confederation, the process exposed weaknesses in FIFA’s decision-making structure and failed to sufficiently involve member associations and governing bodies.

The latest opposition comes after UEFA threatened to boycott future FIFA World Cups if the proposal proceeds, while CONCACAF announced that its member associations had also rejected the plan.

Despite the growing resistance, FIFA has maintained that it will continue discussions on the proposal, insisting that the creation of a commercial subsidiary to manage its flagship tournaments would strengthen its business operations without compromising the governance of the sport.
