Bauchi Police Arrest 20-Year-Old Over Alleged Sexual Assault of Seven-Year-Old

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man, Isiyaku Usman, over the alleged sexual assault of a seven-year-old girl and the theft of two mobile phones in Darazo Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed the arrest in a statement issued on Monday, saying the suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident was reported to the police.

According to the police, the incident occurred on September 6, 2026, after the victim’s 37-year-old father, a resident of Kari village in Darazo, approached the police and reported the alleged assault.

Habib said the girl was reportedly on her way to a neighbouring house while carrying two Android mobile phones when Usman allegedly lured her into a nearby uncompleted building.

The suspect allegedly took possession of the two phones before sexually assaulting the child.

The police said the phones were later recovered from the suspect following his arrest.

Following the complaint, detectives attached to the command reportedly commenced an immediate investigation and traced the suspect.

He was subsequently arrested and found in possession of the stolen devices.

The police said the victim and the suspect were taken to Darazo General Hospital for medical examination as part of the investigation.

Statements were also obtained from the relevant individuals to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to the PPRO, the suspect allegedly confessed to the offences during police interrogation.

He remains in police custody while investigators continue with efforts to gather further evidence and conclude the case.

The Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the alleged offence and directed that the matter be transferred to the Gender Laboratory of the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet and thorough investigation.

The command said the suspect would be charged before a court after the conclusion of investigations, in line with the law.

The commissioner also reaffirmed the police command’s zero-tolerance policy towards sexual and gender-based violence, stressing the need for parents, guardians and community members to remain vigilant and take appropriate measures to protect children from abuse.

He assured members of the public that the command would pursue the matter diligently and ensure that anyone found culpable faces the appropriate legal consequences.
