President Bola Tinubu will address world leaders at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

The Nigerian leader is scheduled to speak during the morning session of the high-level General Debate, which will run from September 22 to 28.

The provisional programme lists Tinubu as the 10th speaker, with his address expected between 11:30 a.m. and noon New York time, or 4:30 p.m. Nigerian time.

Tinubu will join representatives of all 193 UN member states at the gathering, including more than 150 presidents and prime ministers, as well as other senior government officials.

The General Debate will open on September 22 with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expected to speak first, followed by United States President Donald Trump.

The theme of the 81st General Assembly is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” The session will be presided over by Bangladesh’s Khalilur Rahman.

Tinubu’s participation is expected to feature high-level meetings and discussions on major international issues, including climate change, rising sea levels, pandemic preparedness and other global challenges.

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, confirmed the President’s attendance.

He said the gathering would provide Nigeria with an opportunity to present the administration’s reforms and strengthen its engagement with the international community.

Ibrahim also disclosed that Tinubu would engage international stakeholders on border security and policing in West Africa.

He described the region’s porous borders as a major security challenge and said Nigeria was working with the UN on initiatives aimed at improving border management.

The ambassador further revealed that Tinubu could meet with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the General Assembly.

The Nigerian President is also expected to meet outgoing UN Secretary-General António Guterres, whose second term ends on December 31, 2026.

He may also hold discussions with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, who has served in the position since 2017.

The 81st UN General Assembly will officially open on September 8, while the high-level General Debate will take place from September 22 to 28 in New York.
