Xenophobia Row: Tyla Removes Lagos Stop From APOP World Tour

South African Grammy-winning singer Tyla has removed Lagos from the schedule of her APOP World Tour following calls for a boycott linked to renewed xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.

A check of the singer’s official tour website on Friday showed that the Lagos concert, previously scheduled for December 22, had been removed from the itinerary.

The updated schedule still includes performances across Europe, North America and South Africa, but no longer lists Nigeria.

The announcement of the Lagos show had sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some Nigerians urging a boycott in protest against reports of attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa.

Others argued that entertainers should not be blamed for issues beyond their control.

The controversy grew after activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, threatened to mobilise members of his Ratel Movement to stop the concert from taking place.

The removal of Lagos from the tour schedule comes amid renewed concerns over the treatment of Nigerians in South Africa following reports of alleged xenophobic attacks and the deaths of some Nigerian nationals.

As of the time of filing this report, neither Tyla nor her management team had publicly explained why the Lagos concert was removed from the tour schedule.

Concert promoters have also not announced whether the show has been cancelled or postponed.
