Four Police Officers Face Trial Over Alleged ₦52,000 Extortion Of ICPC Chairman

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has ordered the orderly room trial of four police officers accused of abandoning their duty posts and allegedly extorting ₦52,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu (SAN).

The directive was issued by the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, following an investigation into the incident, which the command said occurred on July 11, 2026.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the officers were identified as ASP Clement Ehigala, ASP Sunday Okpe, Inspector Samuel Onoja and Sergeant Yakubu Emmanuel.

According to the statement, the officers allegedly abandoned their lawful duty posts at about 3:34 p.m. and proceeded to Banex Plaza Junction in Wuse II, Abuja, where they mounted an unauthorised traffic enforcement operation.

The command alleged that the officers stopped a motorist for an alleged traffic violation and extorted ₦52,000 from him.

The statement added that the victim was later identified as the ICPC Chairman, Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu (SAN).

It read, “During the course of the illegal traffic duty, the officers stopped a motorist on the allegation of violating traffic regulations and extorted the sum of ₦52,000 from him. The victim was subsequently identified as the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN.

“Following receipt of the complaint, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, PhD, FCAI, ordered the immediate arrest of the four officers and directed that they be subjected to orderly room trial for abandoning their lawful duty posts, embarking on unauthorised traffic enforcement, and engaging in the alleged extortion.”

Adeh said disciplinary proceedings had already commenced in line with the Nigeria Police Force regulations.

“The Command has commenced disciplinary proceedings against the officers in line with established police regulations, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and zero tolerance for misconduct by its personnel,” she stated.

The development comes days after Sanusi disclosed that the four officers had been arrested over the alleged extortion during an illegal stop-and-search operation around the Banex area.

The police commissioner had condemned the officers’ conduct, describing them as unworthy of wearing the police uniform. He alleged that they abandoned their assigned duty posts, mounted an illegal checkpoint and extorted the anti-corruption agency chairman without knowing who he was.

Sanusi also warned that any officer found guilty after the orderly room trial would face appropriate disciplinary measures, including dismissal where necessary.
