Two Killed, Three Injured In Anambra Student’s Hostel Collapse

No fewer than two persons have been confirmed dead, while three others sustained injuries following the collapse of a three-storey building in Amaokpala, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The building, located in Oko Community and used as an off-campus residence for students of the Federal Polytechnic Oko and other tenants, collapsed on Monday, prompting an emergency rescue operation.

The Acting Executive Secretary of the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Ndidi Omega, confirmed the casualties in an interview with journalists in Awka after Monday’s rescue efforts.

According to her, the injured victims are currently receiving treatment at a hospital, while search and rescue operations will continue on Tuesday.

“The rescue operation will continue tomorrow, but at the end of today’s activity, two persons are confirmed dead and three injured,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State Government has sealed off the collapsed building and commenced efforts to identify and apprehend the owner and manager of the property.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chijioke Ojukwu, said the government would also begin integrity tests on buildings within the area to prevent similar incidents.

Ojukwu disclosed that preliminary investigations indicated there were visible signs of structural failure in the building before it collapsed.

He alleged that despite the warning signs, the owner prioritised financial gain over the safety and lives of the occupants.

He added that the premises would remain sealed pending the outcome of investigations, noting that the state government would announce its official position after the investigation is concluded.
