AMMON Withdraws Court Case, Unlocks Procurement of 1.55 Million Smart Meters

The Association of Meter Manufacturers of Nigeria (AMMON) has withdrawn its lawsuit against the Federal Government, removing a major obstacle that delayed the procurement of 1.55 million smart electricity meters.

The move allows key metering programmes, including the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme, Meter Acquisition Fund Phase III, and the Presidential Metering Initiative, to resume after months of uncertainty.

AMMON President, Durosola Omogbenigun, said the association decided to discontinue the case after the Federal Government pledged stronger support for local meter manufacturers.

He noted that the government had agreed to promote locally produced meters and implement measures to reduce dependence on imports.

According to Omogbenigun, both sides have also created a joint working group to expand opportunities for indigenous manufacturers and strengthen local production capacity.

The Ministry of Power confirmed that the case was formally withdrawn at the Federal High Court in Kano following discussions involving the ministry, the Bureau of Public Enterprises, the Transmission Company of Nigeria, and other stakeholders.

The dispute began in April 2026 when AMMON secured a court order stopping the procurement process, arguing that the framework favoured imported meters over locally manufactured products.

With the legal challenge now resolved, the procurement process is expected to continue, supporting efforts to reduce Nigeria’s metering gap, improve electricity billing accuracy, and enhance power sector performance.
