Speaking on the National Mall, Trump blended references to American history with campaign-style messaging, at times delivering remarks similar to those at his political rallies.

US President Donald Trump has launched 16 days of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence with a rally-style speech in Washington, turning the national commemoration into a highly political event.

Speaking on the National Mall, Trump blended references to American history with campaign-style messaging, at times delivering remarks similar to those at his political rallies.

He declared that “America is back” and portrayed the country as undergoing a renewed period of strength and global influence.

The president also used the address to criticise his predecessor Joe Biden, praise his own administration’s economic record, and highlight what he described as major foreign policy achievements.

His remarks included claims about economic growth and international developments that were not independently verified during the speech.

The event marked the opening of the “Great American State Fair,” a 16-day festival featuring exhibits from all 50 states and US territories, along with cultural displays, military flyovers, music performances, and large-scale installations across the National Mall.

Organisers said the celebrations will continue through July 10 and include attractions such as regional food showcases, a large Ferris wheel, and performances by military bands and invited artists.

However, the anniversary has drawn criticism from some observers who say the event has taken on a partisan tone, with Trump placing himself at the centre of the national celebrations.

Several performers reportedly withdrew from the programme, citing concerns over its political direction.

Despite the criticism, supporters at the event praised the opening ceremony, describing it as a patriotic celebration and a strong display of national pride.
