No fewer than five youths were killed and several others injured when suspected bandits attacked a mining site in Gero village, Gyel District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State on Tuesday.

The attack occurred around 3 p.m., hours after gunmen invaded the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, located about five kilometres from the community, where three security operatives were reportedly killed.

A resident of the area, Festus Dalyop, said the victims were working at the mining site when the attackers arrived on motorcycles and opened fire.

According to him, five persons died instantly, while several others sustained injuries during the attack.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth-Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, condemned the killings and described the incidents in Gero and Kuru as a troubling sign of worsening insecurity in the area.

He expressed concern over the safety of residents and participants at the NIPSS and urged security agencies to take urgent action to prevent further attacks.

Tengwong called on government authorities to strengthen security surveillance and ensure adequate protection of lives and property in affected communities.

The spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, confirmed the incident, saying investigations had commenced and a manhunt had been launched for the perpetrators.
